There’s a melancholy nostalgia about this series of photographs that harks back to more optimistic days; Photographer Craig Howarth’s focus on fading icons and logos reminds us of a sunnier time when the US’ love affair with the motor car was at its height, when the open road beckoned and when Elvis would be the soundtrack to our top down road trip. By contrast, the pickups and utility vehicles in this set of images have been mercilessly worked into the ground and the modern vehicles have a determined business-like air quite opposite to the smooth seductive contours of their forerunners. These images were made on 3 trips over 2 years and Craig Howarth’s nostalgic road theme is an ongoing work; “The Road” calls again in 2013 when he visits East Coast USA.
